Kelly comes from a musical family. His father, Bill Emerson, is a very famous banjo player who was inducted into the Blue Grass Hall of Fame. Kelly's talent is definitely passed down through his DNA. He started playing the guitar at the age of 12 and released a CD called "Kelly Emerson, Big Daddy's Barn Burner Blues" which gained great reviews in Blue Grass magazines.

In 1994 Gary wrote the first of six songs for the annual United Way Campaign and in 1996, the song "Everybody Wins" received a special award for excellence from The United Way of Hillsborough County. In 1998, Gary and Kelly teamed up with Frank Dodd to form Three Floors Up (a strong Classic/Southern Rock Trio). That same year, Gary placed 1st at the International Songwriters Guild in Orlando, Florida with the song “Love in the Night”.
